There is a saying; If something is worth doing, it is worth doing well. (or with excellence)
Providing emergency shelter is our primary purpose. How do we know we are doing it with excellence? Our shelter guests tell us so. Dinner is a great time to sit down with our guests and ask questions. From time to time I ask our guests about their shelter experience with us. I want to know what is and is not working.
Our guests tell me our shelter is different from every other shelter out there. And that is a good thing. What things have they identified that make our shelter desirable and excellent?
- Each host site is limited to 35 guests. Nobody is “invisible” with our volunteers.
- Our guests are known by name. Either their legal name or, if they prefer, a street name. Being called by name helps our guests feel valued and noticed as an individual.
- Personal possessions are in locked storage overnight. For a brief period of time they don’t have to worry about their stuff. They can actually rest.
There is always room for improvement. We listen very carefully to our shelter guests and our volunteers as we consider what “tweaks” we may make to our shelter setting for the next shelter season.
Severe Weather Shelter Network has been participating in the 40 HANDS in forty days campaign to raise $20,000 by Friday, April 10th.
